Bobby & Kathy

My tattoo of la Virgen de Guadalupe is a major conversation starter. Today on my way to work on the bus I met a man named Bobby. Bobby was a 50-something year old man who wanted to know where I got my tattoo done, how much it cost, why I got it, etc. I told him all about my tattoo artist; Milford Barns (if you are in SoCal and are interested in him tattooing you, email me and I can get you his contact info) and how thrilled I am to have her on my arm. He explained to me a tattoo he wanted; three roses surrounding his deceased wife's name "Kathy" over his heart. He told me all about Kathy, how they had been together 28 years, how he never wanted to look for another girlfriend now that she passed away, how she was his best friend, how he missed her everyday, and how he could barely eat or do anything in the months following her death. We talked for 20 minutes, and he shared his soul with me. Society tells men that they are not allowed to express their emotions and that tears make you weak, but here was a man sharing his story with tears in his eyes to a stranger on the bus who he will most likely never run into again.

  1. You don't know how much I love your tattoo. And that's such a cool experience. I love having random intimate conversations with strangers. Situations like that have happened to me several times. I think its so funny how you can find out so much about a person and then never see them again.
Anyways, love your outfit, as always.

  3. That story, man. I love it. I love how your tattoo inspired that guy to tell his story and that you mentioned the whole men-must-be-strong-and-brave-and-have-no-emotions thing that goes down, because oftentimes people forget that that's a societal construct too. And your tattoo is fokin awesome and your outfit makes me smiiiiile and I'm really just really tired right now but i like diz post :)

  5. I'm crying pretty hard right now. Even though I don't have a tattoo, I can imagine that the greatness of a tattoo is not only the visual aspect of it but also how it brings people together, like in your case, and all the stories being told. I think it's so beautiful, this.

  13. Not proud to say this, but I've made my husband cry a few times. At least I know that he isn't the type to bottle it up and act like it doesn't phase him when I'm being awful. Showing that much emotion to a stranger, though, that's on a different level! Thanks for sharing this :)

Also, I'm loving the blonde! I'm a little biased tho, haha

  20. Was Bobby an ex cholo by any chance? They are the only men with real feelings. My friend and I once ended up in a heart felt conversation with a man named memo at a bowling alley bar. Dude was deep. Tear drops on the eyes. He made us feel like we could rule the world. He was that inspiring. Anywho, I don't blame him, your tat is rad. I told my baby daddy he better not get my name if I die cause he wouldn't do it if I were living and that's effed up cause I wouldn't be able to see it. People never get the roses when they can still smell them.
